Laser after cataract surgery

Modern cataract surgery replaces your cloudy natural lens with a clear artificial acrylic lens, which will remain clear for a lifetime. This new lens sits in the capsular bag, which was opened to remove the cataract.

The back of the bag can become frosted like a bathroom window or simply hazy, meaning your vision becomes blurred again. This used to be common but now happens in less than one in 20 patients, in one or both eyes.

This can be quickly fixed by using a YAG laser to clear the back of the bag, giving you immediate clear vision like you had straight after the original cataract surgery. Complications from this procedure are very rare.

Called a YAG Laser Capsulotomy, this takes just a few minutes to do and does not hurt. The laser makes a tiny hole in the capsule, allowing it to be opened in a controlled and painless way. Your vision and eye pressure will be checked before and after the laser, which will detect any differences very quickly.

You can book into the outpatient clinic to have this painless procedure carried out at Fulwood Hall Hospital only.

Costs:

£405 for one eye

£550 for both eyes
